Your Questions About Digital Piano

Sandra asks…

I want to record music from my digital piano on my laptop, how do I do it?

My digital piano came with usb connection.

I assumed that I wil need a a music programme, so I got cubase 5. How do I record my piano?

Thanks for the help

admin answers:

There must be an installation disc that came with the keyboard. Install the software on the disc.
If not google search “~brand name of keyboard and model~ driver”
download and install the driver.
Does the keyboard have MIDI output?

David asks…

what does a MIDI do? If i connect my digital piano to my computer using a MIDI can i record what i play?

basically i want to be able to play a song on my digital piano and record it on my computer so that i can use it as the audio in a slideshow.. would a MIDI allow me to record what i play on my digital piano onto my computer?

admin answers:

You can do this but there is an easier way. You can get MIDI software for your computer that will translate the MIDI into notes that then could be recorded.

The easier way is to connect the headphone or audio output of the keyboard to the computer’s “line input” (blue connector). You will need an audio recording program on the computer – here is a good free one:

Mandy asks…

If a person can play a digital piano can he play an acoustic one even if he never played an acoustic?

So he can play a Digital piano very well but has never played an acoustic piano. Then one day he went and bought an acoustic piano and never learn ed how to play an acoustic would he know how to play because he learn ed how to play a digital piano or is it a whole different thing?

I Don’t know how to play either of them but I’m buying a digital piano.

admin answers:

He would still be able to play on the acoustic, but some of the subtleties may have been missing from his instruction on the digital piano. (Everything else will remain the same though)
.
For instance: Most acoustic pianos have 3 pedals that have specific uses. Most (cheaper) digital pianos don’t have those pedals, so their use would have to be learned.
.
Also, most (cheaper) digital pianos don’t have a realistic acoustic “touch.” Playing the piano is more than just plopping the finger down at the right time…there are subtle differences that a pianist can create if they know how to use the acoustic keyboard well.
.
Other than that, and the fact that many digital keyboards will be shorter (so you won’t have the full range of keys available), that’s about it. The basic technique remains the same, so you should be just fine.
.
Have fun!

Betty asks…

What is the best digital piano?

I am a violin teacher that is switching to digital so i dont have to worry about tuning. I want a black polished attractive digital piano without a ton of bells and whistles. Price range between $1000-2000. I’d like a few recording tracts, a metronome, and to be able to change the brilliance of the sound.

admin answers:

Apparently the BEST digital piano right now is the Yamaha AvantGrand N3

… But you’re missing a 0 off the end of your high number: $20k

Charles asks…

Where can I buy a cheap digital piano?

Is there any store or outlet, where are there for sale used digital pianos ? For beginners, but working normally.

admin answers:

Any NORMAL music store that take trade ins will have a selection of USED and less expensive digital pianos.

Skip Costco, BestBuy, Target, or where ever

… Of course if people only buy at those places, there will be NO music stores left, and hence, no market for used instruments except for the city dump.

Your Questions About Electronic Keyboard Software

Steven asks…

We need an electronic sound to our band?

The Genre of music we want to play is electronic/dance/rock. If you don’t understand what i mean, well we want to cover songs such as “I’m not alone – Calvin Harris” or Parlez Vous Francias – Art Vs Science” or “Propane Nightmares – Pendulum” Take a look at them on youtube. We want to play in clubs and we are looking for the best way to get around a keyboard player as we don’t have one. Now I’m thinking to maybe find some sound editing software and to take the individual keyboard parts out of the song and to play it live during our set… Or maybe to create the music myself on Fruit Loop Studio (fl studio) and also play it during out set, it would be very difficult and very time consuming though.. Does anyone have any helpful ideas????

admin answers:

A midi controller can trigger any sound or automation or turn on or off an effect in fl studio, youll need a laptop during the performance

Mandy asks…

Good Editing and Recording Software for Beginners?

I’m planning on starting to produce electronic music, but I’m not sure what software to begin on. I love the layouts of FL Studio and Logic Studio, but FL Studio doesn’t work for Mac (I have a MacBook Pro) and Logic Studio costs way too much. I’m looking for something that costs around $20-70, possibly a little more, with an easy interface and not too much features that I won’t use. I have a Akai LPK25 MiDi Keyboard for synths and ect., but I don’t have good software to use it with. All help is appreciated! Thanks!

admin answers:

Reaper is an excellent piece of music software. Cheap too. At $60, it’s right within your budget and it’s available for Mac as well….

Jenny asks…

Do they make keyboards with samplers in them?

I’m looking to trigger premade samples for live shows. I play keys and sing in a band and I would like to be able to trigger sounds, musical scales, and electronic beats during live performances. Do they make keyboards that you can program samples to them to trigger during a performance? Also do they make keyboards of this kind with midi capabilities to change the keys sounds and trigger samples (I’m assuming you need specific software)? I know this question is broad but i don’t know a lot in the samplers and digital keys world.

admin answers:

Yes. Something like this has most, if not all of the functions you are looking for….

It has pads you can use to trigger samples and play all sorts of different sounds. It comes with some pretty decent software and this is all done through MIDI. You just hook up the keyboard to your computer with the lead which is provided and you’re ready to go. It has tons of other useful features too.

Lisa asks…

Basic home electronic music recording setup?

Hey guys, I decided I want to start recording electronic music, not necessarily professional, but I want to create electronic music similar to Deadmau5, Tiesto, and Skrillex. It doesn’t have to be limited to progressive house or dubstep.

ANYWAYS, here’s what I have so far, equipment and software wise:
-Macbook pro
-Logic Pro 9

and that’s it. I need to know what the bare essentials are I should buy, for instance I know i need a MIDI keyboard, I am looking at a keystation 61es for about $100 on craigslist, nothing special. Is there anything else I need, either hardware or software wise? Also, would logic pro 9 be my best bet for recording progressive house music, or is there something more practical?!

admin answers:

I am not sure if you will encounter latency related issues with Macbook pro, bit in case you do you will have to get a good soundcard / audio interface.

How about monitors or atleast good pair of headphones?

Your Questions About Digital Piano Weighted Keys

Nancy asks…

looking for 88 weighted key keyboard? what is 88-Note weighted hammer action?

i found a keyboard that says:

Casio CDP-100 88-Note Weighted Hammer Action Digital Piano

does this mean the keys are fully weighted? or does it mean it’s only hammer action?
thank you

admin answers:

Hammer action means that the action of the hammer hitting the string is actually simulated inside the keyboard with a fake hammer. They are typically fully weighted, but they are extra-realistic.

Some keyboards also have graded hammer action, which means that the touch is progressively lighter for the higher keys. Some acoustic pianos (most grands, I believe) are like this.

I have a piano already but I’m a singer and i really need a keyboard to transpose the music when I play so I thought i would invest in a keyboard. tell me what one I should get and why. IF THERE IS ANOTHER KEYBOARD LET ME KNOW. IT HAS TO HAVE WEIGHTED KEYS! :)

Thank You! Happy New Year!

admin answers:

I think the first one is better

Sandra asks…

In general, do you prefer Korg, Yamaha, or Casio?

I’m looking to buy a basic 88-weighted-key digital piano/keyboard around $500 and have found several models from each brand. I’m going to do a lot more research, but does anyone have a strong preference?

admin answers:

This is a matter of preference. I worked and sold for the 3 companies mentioned. A good weighted piano is Korg all the way, not Yamaha.

Not saying Casio is bad or Yamaha, but Korg has that something extra in the feel of the keys. Try them out. Korg is a pioneer in keyboard and has nothing to learn from Yamaha. Again, Yamaha make excellent pianos but when it comes to synthesizers, even Casio make a great instrument.

Korg is pricey. I agree. BUT, you are getting a helluva of a GREAT quality instrument. I hear all kinds at the studio and if you want to listen to Korg’s power and tone, get Gino Vannelli’s album and you will know why Korg is way better than most synth.

Richard asks…

Grade 7 – and still using a digital piano…?

I’m 16, and currently practicing for my grade 7 piano exam. However, although the keys on my piano are weighted, it doesn’t have the same feel as the piano I get examed on, nor the same as my piano teacher’s piano. I find it much easier to play on my digital piano so whenever I go to my piano lessons I find I can never play as well as I can on my piano at home or in the exam. I have a Yamaha YDP131 (I think this digital piano‘s name has now changed) for £650 but should I be using something ‘better’ now?

admin answers:

You should be using a real piano if you’re planning to test on one. Unless you go out and spend the money to buy a higher end digital piano the waited keys will be nothing more than a cheap simulation of the real thing, and even high end digitalis aren’t going to be exactly the same, because there is a lot that goes into the “weight” on a piano key than just force feedback. You really need to be practicing on the type of piano you plan on testing on, or at the very least a real piano. Digital piano’s are a great thing to practice a piece on and perform on at times, but there just is no replacement for the tension and feedback of the piano mechanisms and strings.

Donna asks…

Buying an electronic piano keyboard…?

I’m starting college soon and my major is vocal music education. One of the classes required is an applied piano class, so I want to buy a keyboard that I can have in my apartment. I don’t have a lot of money (college student, remember?), but I’m not a beginner pianist, so I want something semi-nice. Does anyone have any suggestions? I wanted to have a few opinions before I go calling a music store to bother them about it. (:

Craigslist / ebay for synthesizers!

Mark asks…

If I burnt up a keyboard with a laptop charger, will the charger mess up my laptop?

I accidently plugged in my laptop charger to my electronic keyboard ( piano keyboard), and i think I burnt up the keyboard, as there was smoke coming out of the plug in hole on the keyboard… anyway, my question is, will the charger cause any damage when I plug it into my laptop, I have been too nervous to try it.

admin answers:

The charger has a specific output voltage that is used for your laptop…each can be different. The keyboard probably had a lower voltage requirement, thus the higher voltage ruined it. Most will have the voltage needed, listed somewhere close to the power port. Like 9v, 300Ma meaning 9 volts, 300 milliamps…out put. So if you plug a 12 volt 600 milliamp into it, it will fry it. Of course.

Chances are, that your laptop just had a higher requirement then your keyboard, and your charger is still working okay…if in doubt, take it to a computer shop and have them test the output of the charger….they can do it with a voltmeter. If it says 9 v, then the meter should read close to that.

If you don’t want to risk it, then buy a new charger. But most chargers, if bad, will not put out any current at all…and so nothing would work….

I would think it would be okay to use…the output was probably just to high for the keyboard.

But…if in doubt…check it out.

Betty asks…

What is the difference between a electronic portable keyboard and a digital piano?

admin answers:

There are probably several things but the most important is that a digital piano uses weighted keys to give the feel and response of a real piano. It provides the resistence and feel so the person will learn the techniques that are needed to play on a real piano. Yamaha makes a great digital piano that professionals use for about 3K

Mandy asks…

What are the kind of headphones that plug into a (piano) keyboard?

I’m looking for the kind/name of headphones that will connect to a piano keyboard or for electronic music (there’s a name for them, but I don’t know it right now). They’re not normal headphones, I know that, and the end of the cord (the metal part) is bigger than normal on normal headphones.

Does anybody know what I’m talking about? Cuz I have to buy a pair for one of my courses and I’m not sure what they’re called. And also, if someone is really, really smart, could you recomend me a set of headphones like the kind I described? That would be a lifesaver.

Thanks in advance!!

admin answers:

Well the head phones are like all other headphones the only difference being the connecting pin what u need to do is look in Ur keyboard manual it will have specifications for the connecting pin .they should be available at stores that stock musical instruments.
