What questions should I ask before purchasing a used electronic keyboard?
Aside from the obvious question of “does it work?”, what other questions or considerations should I ask before purchasing a used keyboard from craigslist? The keyboard in question is a Yamaha PSR-172.

Whats a cool thing to do with an electronic keyboard and a computer?
I have a keyboard and a computer. What cools things can I do with them?
admin answers:
Nothing unless it’s a midi keyboard and your pc has a midi input, e.g. On your sound card. But since sound card’s are built into mobo’s and dont have midi-in these days, my guess is you dont.
There are midi-USB adaptors around, if you are willing to pay for one. They are more than just a cable so they tend to cost a fair bit, and dont always work great from what i’ve heard. You’d be better off buying a 2nd-hand midi controller keyboard on Ebay that has USB-out (I doubt regular keyboards have this).

What is different about playing a keytar from an electronic keyboard? Is there a sound difference?
What does a keytar neck do? The instrument sounds no different than a keyboard.
admin answers:
Keytars come in 2 varieties –
The first one is no different than a regular electronic keyboard in that it includes a particular sound set or synthesis engine. The only difference would be that you play it similar to a guitar – It straps around your shoulder and you play it like you would a guitar, standing upright. The neck usually includes a pitch wheel and a mod wheel, which are simply controllers that alter your sound while playing live. Keytar players normally play melodies with their dominant hand and control the mod wheels with their non-dominant hand.
The second variety is a Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) controller. This will look almost identical to any keyboard or keytar you see except the fact that it has no sounds included in it. You would actually have to plug the keytar into another keyboard or digital instrument and use the sounds in that. The MIDI keytar is used like a controller to play the sounds from the other unit. The MIDI keytar sends messages (notes, pitch, velocity, etc) to the sound source as you play. Most digital instruments made after 1983 include MIDI connections so that you can use them as a controller or a sound source. So some Keytars will come with both internal sounds and MIDI capabilities to give you creative freedom.

How does one sustain a note when playing an electronic keyboard?
I am an intermediate pianist, and I’m now looking for an elec. keyboard. but I am mystified as to how to sustain notes! HELP
admin answers:
You plug a simple single switch pedal into the sustain or damper pedal plug, usually in back of the keyboard. The more sophisticated the keyboard is, the more options you have. Some keyboards even have a keyhold plug that acts like the middle pedal on a keyboard with a correct action. You can even purchase a more functional pedal. Korg has an excellent model that has a rubber extension that swings out so you can hold the pedal in place. Other models attach the pedals to the legs with a chain, or to the keyboard i some other way. You can also put a rug underneath the keyboard to keep the pedal from moving around so much. Hope this helps,

How do I make these sounds on an electronic keyboard?
Keyboard has different “voices”, different sounds right? Well I hear a lot of songs that I wish I could play that way but I can’t find the right voice for it. Then I wonder, if they didn’t use the keyboard what DID they use? And is it possible to download more voices or something?
PS. I am looking for the voices used for the song Fireflies.
