Your Questions About Electronic Keyboard Software

Susan asks…

What do I need to get started making Electronic/DarkWave music?

Recommend some Hardware and Software. I have some free audio recording/editing software, but its not that great. and I have a keyboard, it MIGHT be able to be used as a MIDI controller, but idk anything about how that works. I do know it has a MIDI-Out port though.

I use FL Studio Producer Edition for my electronic music. Very capable host, quite easy to learn yet very advanced when you get the hang of it. It supports VST so you can use many free VST instruments available to download online to get more sounds.

You can check the demo here: http://demo.flstudio.com

In case you end up getting FL Studio, you can get 10% discount on your first order from image-line with this promo link for new customers: https://support.image-line.com/jshop/shop.php?offer=Default&promo=BACJBAA468

Just make sure you get the right version. The demo is basically the same as the Producer Edition, except for some of the generators like Sytrus and Directwave that are only available in the Signature Bundle. You can compare the editions here: http://flstudio.image-line.com/documents/editions.html

Other options are Ableton Live, Cakewalk Sonar, Cockos Reaper, and many more. Check here for a list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_audio_workstation

Regarding hardware, a good audio interface might be helpful and if you want to use your keyboard as a MIDI controller keyboard you will need to have an interface for it. Is your MIDI Output port a DIN plug ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini-DIN_connector ) ?
Then you will need a similar connection on your computer, either by using an audio interface that has this port, or by using a MIDI Din to USB cable.

Good luck!

Sandy asks…

If I buy a keyboard (piano) with a headphone jack, can I connect to my computer to record?

I’m terribly disinclined when it comes to music, but I have a lot of creative energy so I keep buying new instruments… Since I tend to flake on each purchase, I’m looking for a cheap way to record what I do an an electronic keyboard (synthesizer… whatever). If I buy a keyboard with a headphone output, can I also buy an adapter and software to translate that output signal to USB (or something) and accept the data on my PC then manipulate or at least record the music(Ha!) and save it as an .mp3?

If so, where should I start looking for an adapter, what would it be called and how much do they run? Also, what are some software packages that might be able to do what I want and is there anything freeware/downloadable that I can get (website, cost)?

If this is impossible, does anyone have a secondary suggestion?

Thanks!

Yes its possible you just need aauxilarry input cord that will allow you to run from the headset jack on your keyboard to the microphone input on your computer. I would suggest converting it to digital sound first via a usb adapter so that the sound is better quantity.

David asks…

What are a few good beginner programs for making techno/trance/electronic beats and music?

I’m looking into buying a Korg Keyboard to start making some beats and synthesizing music, but I want to try it out first just on my comp but i don’t have a great idea were to look or start when it comes to this. Any good suggestions for some simple non expensive software? (Either Free or cheap software is except-able anything under 50 dollars) =)

Steven asks…

What software/instruments do people use to create electronic music?

How exactly do professionals produce electronic/synthesized music? (For example, MGMT, Justice, Lady Gaga, DJ Tiesto, Disco Biscuits, MSTRKRFT and several other hip hop/rap/techno/pop artists who have various synthesized sounds in their music).

What specific computer softwares/programs are they using? Are they just regular recording programs (Cubase, ProTools, Garageband, etc)?

What instruments do they use? (special keyboards? or what other electronic equipment?)

Is it different when playing live and playing in a recording?

admin answers:

If you can’t play all the instruments which is normal. I would suggest to get your hands on REASON v4. That is, by far, one of the best software to create music and all this, in a virtual fashion. The sound banks are awesome and all the guitar, piano, violins, drums sound like the real deal.

I was in awe when i heard what this program could do. Also, you can burn your CD directly from the software.

Cubase is good but I must say that REASON is much easier, faster to learn, and the outcome is simply mind-blowing. In the studio, I use Cubase and Reason depending on how quick and how complex I swant things to be. Also, many musicans don’t know about REASON so we have to have Cubase to acomodate them.

Here is the link… Download the demo. Its well worth it.

Ruth asks…

I want to make a song but I don’t have a band.Know any software that will allow me to put parts together?

I have a guitar(basic skills), electronic keyboard, and my voice(probably terrible). I have these songs I’m always making up but forget them because I don’t know how I would make them a reality without a band. I know their exist some two-person bands that put parts together and the song come out great.

What will I need (software-preferably free)? I have wave pad but I don’t know if that will cut it.

admin answers:

Loop Pads is pretty cool and a good starting point as many of the paid audio mixing programs have a very steep learning curve and are more aimed at the professional musician.
