Your Questions About Musical Instrument Crafts

Mark asks…

What IS this subculture???? Have you seen these kids?

I’ve seen these kids (typically 18-late 20′s looking) in every major city I’ve lived in. They typically hang out in touristy areas. WHAT ARE THEY? Is there anywhere on the web that talks about them??

Clothing style= Black and brown cotton/denim. Unidentifyable slogans crafted on, like with a paintbrush or sharpie. Torn off sleeves, ripped off cutoffs. Boots= always leather army boots. CROSS laced. No bright colors at all. No accessories except maybe shoelace necklaces. No nail polish or makeup.

Jewelry = NO SPIKES OR O-rings…..just the occasional nose ring or earrings. Always silver or iron looking. No gems. Sometimes a leather belt-like bracelet on one wrist.

Tattoos= Also minimal, often on the face. No words just tribal like decoration, blackwork. Look homemade.and are simple.

Hair style = Practically always home-done dreadlocks. Shaved undercuts. Artificial coloring or bleaching is rare and minimal. (like one odd highlight…)

Accessories= MOST COMMON= Camping-sized backpacks, sometimes even with musical instruments (violin, guitar, bongo). Sometimes the cases look expensive and sometimes they don’t.

PASTTIMES = Hanging out in public parks in a circle with mongrel dogs on rope-leashes. Rumor is that they travel the country on black-painted school busses or campers. Also a rumor that they fix up and squat in abandoned buildings.

PUBLIC INTERACTION = Hands out ‘zines” with titles like “FIX IT UP!” or “STOP ****ing and START A REVOLUTION!”. Sometimes even panhandle with signs that ask for specific items “NEED SHOELACES” or “NEED FLOUR”. I’ve never seen them ask for money specifically. They don’t give the “Panhandler’s Pitch” either None of that “dude I need 3 bucks for the bus and my mom’s sick blah blah blah..”

DIET/HYGENE = Most describe themselves as “FREEGAN” which means, yes, dumpster diving outside of supermarkets and bakeries. .Most are vegetarian or vegan also who eat like civilized human beings and keep gardens in vacant lots or even buy food with money from stores. They seem to know about soap+water, their clothes look dingy and their hair is wild but their faces and arms are clean-looking. Dispite ratty clothing and hair style, still have a nourished, healthy appearance, Some of the men even have well manicured facial hair like goatees…Dental care is same as any other population, varies with individual.

MUSIC = They carry their own instruments… Never seen with ipods or radios. They seem to just play whatever comes to mind, no identifyable style. Definitely not punk or rock of any kind in case you were wondering.

DRUGS = I don’t know…They don’t look strung out.

ANY IDEAS?
okay it looks like I answered my own question, there is a FREEGAN lifestyle it’s not just a diet thing.

Oh and Basketball? I’m taking the points back by flagging your chatty non-answer. =P

Nevermind, I found out what they were, they’re called Freegans.

And yeah I put it into this catagory among others because I also thought they’d be just runaways and well statistically a significant number of runaways are GLBT. No offense.

Hhmmmm…I’ve seen these kids too but haven’t thought this much about it. I’ll keep an eye out to see what it means..maybe they’re just homeless and found a culture to support them “on the street”?

im trying to sell a Bowflex for my dad and have no idea what catigory it should go under an I also don’t want to feel li8ke a complete idiot saying it’s a sporting good

admin answers:

I would place it under Health and Beauty since it is an exercise tool. But if you want to be safe go ahead and place it under, general for sale or even sporting goods. Just make sure to add a detailed description of the item so that people have as much info as possible. In addition, you have the option of including a keyword section at the bottom of your listing so that when one searches for an “exercise tool, bowflex,” for example it will come up right away. And if possible, make sure to include a picture or 4 max as those really help potential buyers. Hope this is helpful. Good luck with the listings!

Sandy asks…

Why can’t there be an all Canadian Symphony Orchestra?

And they write their own concertos from scratch and maybe even make their own musical instruments or enhance them, using Canadian volunteer workers.

With violins from Newfoundland and Labrador, violas from Nova Scotia, cello players from New Brunswick (bass players being cool punk kids from Toronto) This would be mostly Maritime string because they’d use fiddle tunes to impose into orchestral string music.

Then you would have accordians from Quebec and some keyboard and drums having solo parts in the concerto. (A French section of one of the orchestral movements.)

The Canadian brass would help out the brass section, but also we’d get BC artists and artisans from Vancouver to design new brass fugal horns to enhance the brass section using Pacific Northwest arts and craft.

For woodwinds, we will focus 100% on Prince Edward Island and develop the reeds from their co-operatives where they’ve been working together for 200 years. And the wood parts of the instruments will be manufactured by lumberjacks in Kapuskasing, Ontario.

And then we will have prairie singers from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

And the drums, oh yes the drumming, from Nunavut Inuit and then lastly, there will be vocal sound effects from Northwest Territory and special glacial sound effects from the Yukon with sounds of digging shovels for gold.

Why can’t this be created in Canada???
and you know, maybe it should be a youth orchestra. Get Canadian kids into classical music, instead of spending money on prisons for juveniles.
I’m not totally thrilled with Harper to be honest.
but I want it to be very very very Canadian where the trumpet valves get stuck in the middle of the song because the trumpet and trombone oil is made from maple syrup
Actually in the USA, there’s a summer camp for kids to play musical instruments and perform orchestra concerts and get to see famous people come and play on an outdoor stage for 8 weeks. I was a camper there as a kid.

IT’s called Interlochen Arts Camp in Northern Michigan. It is not far from where Macinac Island joins up with Ontario at Sault Ste Marie I believe. IT’s a great camp, kids come from all over the world. And it’s cabin life with lakes and a little bit of soil and mud.

And the camp’s infirmary is basically like Canada’s healthcare in a way. It’s free, you go and they give you what you need to feel better if you’re sick.
