James asks…
beginner piano techniques?
So I REALLY want to learn how to play the piano but I don’t know how to start.
What I mean is this will be my second musical instrument, I’ve played guitar and have already learned music theory, I’ve also memorized the notes on the piano.
So I feel the only thing left for me to do is learn the techniques pianists use (I have absolutely NO idea what this could include) and to practice my ass off.
So my question: What techniques or exercises do pianists use to become better at what they do? and what are some good beginner songs I could start out with?(I think I’m past the “twinkle twinkle little star” ect., area though)

Here’s one that will drive you nuts – and increase playing with two hands and coordination
very simple (mind numbing) pattern
we’ll run it up an octave and back down
just mimic the left hand with the right
the pattern is 13231 then place 2 where the three was
23453435432 – repeat 13231 – skip 2 to 3 etc
literally (right hand)
c-e-d-e-c >> e- f-g-a-f-g- f -a-g -f-e
1-3-2-3-1 >> 2-3-4-5-3-4-3-5-4-3-2-(keep repeating)
d-f–e-f-d >> f -g-a-b-g-a-g-b-a-g-f
e-g-f-g-e >> g-a-b-c-a-b-a-c-b-a-g
etc until you get to 1 as C again
then the pattern down is
5-3-4-3-5>>skip down (4 is now the old 3) 4-3-2-1-3-2-3-1-2-3-4
and this is also the pattern for the left hand going up
and out play this octave set
in octaves – take it slowly at first – you are teaching your fingers and hands to coordinate
work up to four notes a second (cranking!)
$10,000 lesson
when you learn a new song – play each section 5 times slowly
for every time you play it ‘a tempo’ (at normal speed)
if you make a mistaak – misteak – - – error
go back and start the 5 all over again – slowly
we are teaching the fingers where to go
this comes from a great lady who retired 20 years teaching at
Julliard in New York – wish I had gotten her as a freshman in high school instead of college
all the best

David asks…
I am really into listening piano and I want to learn but…?
To be honest, piano is always the best musical instrument to me due to its beautiful, relaxing melodies with complex harmonies. I honestly do not know how to play it but I want to learn this from scratch so badly. However, the thing is I do not receive many supports from my family and my friends. The main reason is in fact, I’m 18 now and they think that it’s too late for me to get this worked. I mean they told me that my finger is no longer flexible enough to get the positions and techniques right. In addition, my knowledge of musical note(s) is limited so they think paying a fee for me to learn is a sheer waste of money. Personally, I think its not true because I have not been playing it before so I should give it a go. I do not want to be a musician but I want to play it well enough, you know, to relax in my free time. I really want to explore this new hobby but is what my family and friends told me true. Could anyone please give me any advice or suggestion? Many thanks.
PS: I am not native speaker so hopefully you guys catch my drift.

Yes – you can learn
and you may be able to teach yourself –
there are some small electric keyboards that “light up” the keys to
show you where your fingers go
so practice – practice – practice
want a $10,000 music lesson
play it 5 times very slowly – for every time you play ‘a tempo’ (at speed)
then play it at speed -= and when you make a mistake – STOP
and start the 5 times slowly again
I learned a very difficult Chopin piece this way – and thought my teacher was NUTS
but – one day it “fell” into place – and it WORKED!!!!
So – set aside 20-30 minutes a day
dedicate yourself to it
and you WILL become a musician – because I play for myself
one of my biggest compliments came from a friend –
I had been asked to play before a meeting to calm everybody down
and my 20 minutes of music ran out in 15 – (LOL) so I just
played what I wanted and made it up
That other person asked me – is that a REAL song – or are you making it up??
I said I was faking it – and they stormed off mad! Hehehehehehehehehehehehehe
I might invest $150-200 in one of those keybosrds- or look to a used shop
like a Pawn Store – they may have a real deal
practice – practice (you know the drill from here)
by the way – I gave up three times – - – - – - – - – -
and you will be a musician – if you don’t quit
all the best

Stradivarius Question! I think i’m correct.?
Tony says that a distinguishing characteristic of the Stradivarius `violin is the nature of the wood from which it’s made. Shin Lee says that it’s the shape of the f holes that gives the instrument its distinct characteristic. Who is correct?
A. Neither Tony nor Shin Lee is correct.
B. Only Tony is correct.
C. Both Tony and Shin Lee are correct.
D. Only Shin Lee is correct.
Now, i found a little article thats related to the question at hand, but i can’t really seem to understand.
It says
“Like all makers,Stradivarius (1644-1737) was constantly tinkering with the precise dimensions of the instruments-the angle and length of the fingerboard, the thickness and placement of the bass-bar underneath the upper surface of the instrument, and the shape of the f-holes. He took many of his trade secrets with him to the grave.
In the last 50 years, however, historians. musical instrument curators, and scientists have begun to penetrate those secrets, using sophisticated techniques of chemical analysis and radiography to analyze surviving instruments. We now know that key factors from which it was made, the techniques used for carving the wood, and the characteristics of the varnish that protected it.”
So, I’m guessing they’re both correct?

All 4 answer choices are wrong. As far as what to put down for your homework assignment you should consult your teacher or textbook. To understand why you need to know a little bit of physics.
Without getting deep into equations the way a violin produces sound is through the vibrations of the strings. The strings are activated either through plucking or bowing. The bridge transfers the kinetic energy of the strings through the bridge and into the top of the violin, here the f-holes can determine where and how much of the top vibrates, but this is also determined by the properties of the wood the variations in its dimensions. The soundpost transfers these vibrations to the back of the instrument and then the whole body provides a larger resonating surface area. The vibrations create soundwaves in the air that you can hear. The sound produced varies based on specific characteristics of all parts involved.
To some extent the quality of the wood matters. Though in terms of physics the relavent qualities are the dimensions of the wood, it’s density, and it’s refractive index ( a property related to transmission of waves from one medium to another, in this case wood to air).
You could have the exact same wood as a Strad, but if it were not carved properly into the right dimensions you would have a terrible violin. You could take a piece of plywood and make ‘perfectly’ shaped f-holes and have a terrible violin. You could even have the right wood and optimal f-holes and have a bad violin because there are still a few other properties that are very important to the sound of a violin such as the bridge, sound post, strings, rosin and bow.
Be aware that there’s a lot of bad information out there about stradivari violins. They’ve developed a kind of mystique among violinists and luthiers that survives despite the rigors of scientific study of the instruments. If you really want to start to understand this stuff read these papers:

Most lyrics to a song are simply poems put into music. They have rhyme and balance and it is to the writer’s advantage and perogative to find the balance needed and which method to use the rhyming technique.
Examine some of the songs that you enjoy and see how the author used rhyme and balance. Then use a method you like and begin crafting your song.

Donald asks…
How to applying any scales or techniques of musical instrument into a good song harmonically?
admin answers:
Well the scale will be the fundamental mood of the song. If you want to sound pretty and nice, you’ll be using a Major scale. If its sad, a Minor. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to use those specific scales, but I think those would give you an idea of what I mean. You will also want to choose what key to play in that best suits the singers voice, unless the singer can sing without problems in any key. When you want to play in harmony, well, just about every song is in harmony, but not all, anyway, you will know instrument harmonies once you have found your key. Typically, you will play harmonies in thirds, fifths or sevenths. To understand that, lets take the C Major scale for example (C D E F G A B C) The first C is the First note, or the tonic. The second, D, Third, E.. .. Etc. If you want to play in thirds, one person plays C and the other E. You play the same pattern as each other, so the C, which is the 3rd fret on the A string, changes to D (5th fret on A string) then the person playing E (depending on a higher or lower E than the C, for this example we’ll use E on 2nd fret of D string) You will go from E to F which is the 3rd fret on D string. Sorry I am digressing a bit. ANYWAY! That is all you will need to really know for beginner. Oh, and about the technique, find some similar music to which you are going to play and pick up on some of the techniques they use and understand why it is important they are that type of music. Haha if your question made a little more sense I could help you further.
